2 Months Old

Today our little Iris is 2 months old.  She is 11 pounds and 25 inches long.  Her hair is curling up, and her personality is blossoming.  She has become part of the fabric of my soul.  Tonight I’m going to sit down and write a little bit about how she has changed our family so much for the better.  But in the meantime, here is my angel girl from 4 to 8 weeks.

Getting to know miss Iris (Part Two)

Her neck is strong.  She can lift it and turn it to look all around.  She is drawn to any light, but especially the flourescent lights in the kitchen.  When she’s looking at them nothing else exists for her.  Since my last post she’s started sleeping in her co-sleeper and sleeping from midnight until 7am.  It’s her brother who wakes us up most nights, not her.  Her fingers are unusually long and slender.  Her thighs and arms have chubbed up nicely and gained a few extra creases.  Same goes for her neck.  Her tummy though, is flat and taut from all that poop pushing.  Kent jokes that she’s going to have the first baby six pack.  She loves bath time, and I swear looks so happy and satisfied after she’s clean, dry and bundled up again.  It might be her favorite thing.  The hair on the crown of her head sticks up like a troll doll.  There is no smushing it down.  It’s getting longer and longer while the hair on the rest of her head is falling out quickly.  She’s hanging on to a mullet in the back too.  She is happiest being held.

Then there are the intangables that I don’t even have words for.  She is Iris.  She is unique and one of a kind and I know her as well as I know myself, at the deepest possible level, but do not have the words to convey to you what makes her, her.   I’ll bet if you have kids, you know exactly what I mean.

Getting to know miss Iris (Part One)

When she was first born 6(!) weeks ago she had dark brown hair on her head and light blond fuzz on her shoulders. Both of which are falling out now.  She has white blond eyebrows and lashes, and the front of her hair is strawberry blond, but the hair on her legs is brown.  I suppose you could say she’s still keeping us guessing about her eventual hair color.  Her eyes though, are the same purple/blue as her brothers.  The exact color of blueberries.  I’m betting they stay. Her small size shocked us, we weren’t prepared for it and had to run out and buy some newborn size clothes.  They still fit everywhere but in the feet.  She has giant monster feet and her daddy’s long pinky toe (Ellis got my deformed stubby one).

She is extremely laid back. In the beginning she never demanded anything, but now if I don’t get her fed quickly enough she will start to protest loudly. This is the only time she screams. Any other protest comes in the form of a little grunty whine and arm and leg thrashing. For the first several weeks she had to work HARD to get poop out every single time. Her red faced pushing would be accompanied by grunts that remind me so much of this noise that I laugh every time it happens. She’s sleeping from about 10pm to 4am and occasionally even later. Thank the lord. She’ll have nothing to do with her co-sleeper so sleeps with us on a wedge.

She is already fascinated with her big brother, her eyes following his voice around the room. Yesterday she reached out to him with her arm, trying to pull him back close to her face. She does have her limits of face to face contact though, and can push him away just as fast. Her newest talent is cooing and smiling right into your eyes. I’ve never seen such a beautiful smile. Smelling her head is like taking hit of sunshine.
